Men’s Health Week: California Prune Board highlights the importance of diet for healthy bones

Men’s Health Week takes place from today (13th-19th June 2022), with the California Prune Board (CPB) using the event to shine the spotlight on men’s bone health. According to statistics from the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS), 20 percent of men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to the condition.

The CPB highlights research from San Diego State University, which points to the promising effect prunes can have on men’s bone health. The study[1] by Hooshmand, et al., reported that eating prunes daily has a protective effect on bone health in men over 50.

The study forms part of a growing body of evidence that links prunes with bone health. In recognition of this, California Prunes, which make up 40 percent of the world’s supply of prunes, have recently been awarded the coveted ‘Bone Health Approved’ accreditation by the Royal Osteoporosis Society; the first natural food to have been given the status by the UK-based charity.

Registered dietitian and California Prune Board consultant, Jo Travers, explains why eating California Prunes can play a role in strengthening bones. She says: “California Prunes contain vitamins and minerals that contribute to living well and overall health. They are also high in vitamin K and are a source of manganese, which contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.

“It’s important to eat a balanced diet, live a healthy lifestyle, and take regular weight-bearing exercise to maintain skeletal health. Enjoying prunes as a snack or ingredient is an easy and delicious way to work towards that.”
